To fulfill the Navy's VFX requirement and retain the capability for the Phoenix missile, Grumman held the swing-wing concept as valid but otherwise began again, keeping foremost the goal of not just a missile platform, but a true fighter with great speed and maneuverability. The first prototype flight was in May of , and the first two Tomcat squadrons began operating in October of ' The plane is aerodynamically very sophisticated and far ahead of its time.
It has all-moving horizontal stabilizers that not only work to control pitch but also move independently to control roll, and there are spoilers on the upper wing surfaces to augment this whenever the sweep of the wings is less than 57 degrees. The wing is also equipped with both flaps and slats, and of course the wing itself can be swept back or forward, either manually or automatically, to optimize performance throughout the flight envelope.
Above mach one the plane also benefits from "glove vanes", which are small canards extending forward of the main wing to adjust the aircraft's balance and reduce loading on the tailplanes. The result is a fighter which is astonishingly maneuverable for its size at virtually all speeds. I've actually heard an F pilot say he "knew better than to go low and slow" with it! As for weaponry, it's the only plane in the world that can carry the Phoenix, and its AWG-9 radar the largest ever installed in a fighter can track 24 targets simultaneously and fire six of them against the six greatest threats.
Over the years both the plane and its systems have been upgraded, and it remains the fastest Navy fighter ever with the farthest ranging weapon. The Tomcat's retirement is highly controversial for these reasons, and much can be found on the net about this if the reader is interested. It has a lot going for it and I'll get into more detail presently But first I want to say a special word of thanks to Dino Cattaneo for his terrific freeware Tomcat, various versions of which I've been using for years.
He did a terrific job on it, and so did all its other contributors with their tweaks, improvements, textures etc. So to Dino and all those others: Thank you!
Textures to me are a very major issue and can ruin an otherwise perfectly good product if they are below par. Fortunately the textures with this product are worthy of the great visual model. They're all very crisp with very good resolution, nice attention to detail and thank goodness no mipmap blur.
